Sunshine wins grand final

TABLE TENNIS

A BLEND of youth and experience has seen Sunshine claim top honours in the Sunshine and District Table Tennis Association A2 division.

The lethal combination of secondary school student Jack Bouchard, seasoned campaigner Xa Dinh and stalwart Con Fitos clinched a 5-3 victory over the highly-fancied Altona Meadows in the grand final at the West Sunshine Community Centre.

Fitos said his side went into the season decider as underdogs after qualifying for the finals in second spot and a long way off the minor premiers from Altona Meadows.

"We were pretty pumped up to beat them," he said.

"We got to play them two or three weeks before the finals and from that game we knew we could beat them."

Fitos, 32, started playing table tennis when he was 11.

He said the most important aspect to playing was having good hand-eye co-ordination.

"The ball is 40millimetres wide and travels a million miles an hour," he said.

"It's back and forth constantly."

The best performing of the Sunshine boys was Bouchard.

The teenage star won 16 rubbers in the regular season.

More importantly, his wispy forehand was too hot to handle for Altona Meadows in the season decider as he won all three rubbers.

Dinh was the spiritual leader of the Sunshine combination.

The Vietnamese-born player grew up with the sport and was willing to share the tricks of the trade with his teammates.

"He does not stop talking," Fitos said with a chuckle.

"He's a great part of the team and he's always teaching us how to spin the ball properly."

The SDTTA works on a seeding system. The players who featured in A2 this season will remain in that division with no promotion-relegation system.

The likelihood is that players will move from team to team due to the seeding.

It is not too dissimilar to a salary - just that it is based on a player's history.

Fitos said it was a great way to ensure even competition and keep it interesting on Monday nights.

"It works out really well," he said.

"You find that you do not have too many whitewashes."

In the A1 division, Caroline Springs was shocked 5-4 by Sunbury in a thrilling grand final.
