SUNSHINE City's fate in the Royal Victorian Bowls Association division 2 section 1 hinged on the outcome of last Sunday's final round local derby clash with cross-town rival Sunshine RSL.
The battle of Brimbank was postponed to Sunday due to the running of the Australian Open,. A final score was unavailable when The Advocate went to press.
At least City's destination was in its own hands after it sneaked into the top four with only one round to go after defeating Altona (3) 110-87.
Club president and player Clive Brown said: "We hoped to be in the top four this season, so hopefully we can stay in there.
"Beating Altona meant that we moved into the top four and all we need is a win in the final round."
Going in the final round match against the seventh-placed Sunshine RSL, City was expecting to win.
"We should beat them and have been playing some good bowls of late," Brown said.
"Last time we beat them in a close match so we are confident of winning."
While a loss could see them fall outside the top four, if they won it could catapult them up the ladder.
"If we win it is possible that we could move up to third position heading into the finals," Brown said.'
"Finishing third would mean that we would play second instead of first, which would be a bonus.
"There is no second chances once we get into the finals, so we need every advantage we can get."
While relying on more experienced players David George and James Noonan to skip, it is the performance of James Gonera that has been impressive.
"It is the first year that James has skipped full time for us and he has done a really good job," Brown said. "A few of the older players have taken him under their wing and he has matured a lot this season."
