TO say that Sunshine George Cross' season is anything but disappointing is an understatement, with the club again relegated from the Victorian Premier League.
After looking promising with four wins from the first nine games and sitting in the top four, the club finished on the bottom of the ladder with five wins and four draws. A combination of bad luck, players leaving and injuries are among the reasons for such a disappointing end to the season, says club secretary Victar Brincat.
"Of course, we are disappointed with how the season ended, but what can you do? We lost too many players to other clubs and injuries," he said.
"Everything seemed to happen at the wrong time and with the coach leaving on top of that it does make it hard. It was always going to be a tough season for the club which finished eighth last year. "We had only six players in the team from last year, so we spent the first half of the season settling our team.
"When we were sitting fourth after round 10, we were a bit shocked and had started to look towards making the finals.
It was from there that the season started to go wrong. "Barry Devlin, Stuart Nicholson, Trent Waterson, Matthew Cini and David Calleja either left the club or got injured which impacted us.
"Most of these occurred near the end of the transfer window, which meant we didn't have the chance to recruit the players we would have liked to.
"We managed to sign five players quickly and they did a good job, but it put us behind."
Despite the relegation, the third time in the club's history, Brincat says the club still has plenty to look forward to.
"The club is in a better position than we have been for a long time. We are still looking strong and a number of players have indicated that they want to stay on next year. We are going to take our time looking at next season and the future, to get back to the things that has made us a successful club."
