FFV: Landmark year for Reds women

24 Jan, 2012 01:00 AM
CAIRNLEA takes centre stage as the lone western suburbs-based club in Football Federation Victoria's top-tier Women's Premier League this season.

The Reds have made the extraordinary leap from the backwaters of the metropolitan league, through the state leagues and now the big dance.

Reds secretary Beige Hussein told the Weekly it is a landmark year for the club.

"It's going to be a huge year," he said. "This is an opportunity for the girls to play at the highest level in the state."

The Reds have achieved the feat with the bulk of its roster home grown.

Three of their key players, captain Tijen Hussein, Damla Mutluel and Kara Theodorou, started with the club in the under-8s and remained loyal.

They are not only an integral part of the top-flight team, but are passionate about the game and willing to share their experience with the under-age players in coaching roles.

"The whole club is proud of them," Hussein said.

"They're putting back in too by coaching some of the junior teams."

The Reds, coached by the well-respected Mus Fehmi, have a growing female membership and they do not want to put a lid on it.

They had 75 players on the books last season and hope to increase that to more than 100 this season.

They have U12, U14, U16, reserves and seniors teams and will add a metropolitan league team.

Hussein is urging more locals to join the club.

"We're always on the lookout for more players," he said.

"The women's game is the quickest growing sport and we want to continue to increase our numbers."

Meanwhile, the Reds will take to the field in the men's state league with new coach Vincent Ierardo pointing the way.

Ierardo is possibly the youngest coach in club history at just 28 years of age.

He arrives at Furlong Road after a stellar playing career with Sunbury United and is undecided if he will pull on the boots.

"[The appointment] has created a good atmosphere at the club," Hussein said.

"He's attracting young players to the club and we are confident that he will put a good team together."
