FFV: Green Gully Cavaliers gear up for big one

07 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM
GREEN Gully is shooting for its first Victorian Premier League title since 2005.

The Cavaliers were locked into the grand final a fortnight out and cannot wait to run out to the new state-of-the-art AAMI Park on Saturday night.

Cavaliers coach Paul Harris said anticipation is building for the "very, very, special day".

"There has been that little bit of added excitement at training," he said.

"Everyone is looking forward it."

The Cavaliers have produced a stunning form reversal since their mid-season struggles.

It is fair to say the Cavs could have been on a collision course with relegation had it not implemented steps to get out of the mire.

The improved form coincided with shrewd decisions during the transfer window which saw imports Jason Hayne, Brent Fisher and Tim Gould make their way to Green Gully Reserve and the appointment of Ian Dobson as technical director.

"It has been quite a tumultuous year for the club as far as coaching and players coming and going from the club," Harris said.

"It's been a great achievement for the club and I believe the club has gone beyond its wildest expectations just to get to the final so anything from here on is a bonus."

Harris is a true admirer of the work of Dobson. He played under the one-time national league coach for three seasons.

"He was the best coach I played under," Harris said.

The Cavaliers squad is jam packed with big-game experience.

More than half of the starting XI have featured in a VPL grand final at one point in their career.

They will not be daunted by the task confronting them on Saturday night.

"There's a bit of experience there," Harris said.

"The final is on its day."

The Cavaliers will transport supporters free from Green Gully Reserve to AAMI Park on Saturday. The bus will leave at 4.30pm but supporters must register by calling the club during business hours on 93666697.
