THE drought is over.

The Green Gully Cavaliers are relevant again where it matters most in the Victorian Premier League post-season.

The Cavs ended a barren run of five years without a finals win by hammering Hume City 3-1 in an entertaining qualifying final at Epping Stadium on Saturday.

The sweet victory puts the Cavs in a prime position to pounce on a grand final berth.

They will go head-to-head with No. 1 ranked Richmond Eagles in the major semi-final this weekend for the right to move directly into the season decider at AAMI Park on September 11.

Cavs general manager Raymond Mamo has forecast his club to be a real player in this wide open finals series.

"[The win] will boost the players self-belief," he said.

"They now know they have the ability to go all the way. We have got a good squad there."

The foundations for the Cavs' first-up win was built on a rock-solid defence.

The bells and whistles were provided by New Zealand import Brent Fisher.

Fisher - one of two Kiwis to vote green in the latest transfer window - weaved his magic to bag a double in a man-of-the-match performance.

"Brent had a sensational game," Mamo said.

The sides went into half-time deadlocked on nil-all.

There were a host of chances at both ends but the only statistic of note was a yellow card to Cavs defender Cameron Drake for a hard challenge on Hume City winger Philip Riccobene.

Three minutes after the resumption of play, Fisher landed the first punch when he scored to give the Cavs the lead.

But scores were level again when Hume City's attacking midfielder Richard Cardozo fired past Cavs custodian Nikola Roganovic for a 75th minute goal.

The Cavs were leading 2-1 only three minutes later when Fisher claimed a long ball, swivelled and fired past Hume City goalkeeper Lou Acevski.

Hume City went on the attack in search of an equaliser.

But their attack would not bear fruit with the Cavs defensive brick wall of Drake, Steve Burton, Daniel Jones and Mile Medjedovic constantly repelling.

The victory was signed, sealed and delivered for Cavs coach Paul Harris in the 86th minute when Burton stepped up to goal from the penalty spot after a Hume City handball in the box.

Meanwhile, Heidelberg United advanced from the elimination final with a 3-1 win over Northcote City on Saturday night.
