WRFL: Sunshine Kangaroos heed coach's plea

09 Aug, 2011 12:00 AM
SUNSHINE Kangaroos player-coach Brett Jacobs has implored his players to salvage what they can from their wreckage of a Western Region Football League division 1 season.

The Kangaroos answered his call with a runaway 54-point win over North Footscray at Kinder Smith Reserve on Saturday.

"All we can do is finish off on a positive note and take something into next season," he said.

"We want to end the season on a high."

The Kangaroos went into the game missing arguably their three most important players.

The Wiggins brothers - Patrick and Simon - and Danny Jacobs, all former AFL players, have endured long stints on the sidelines with injury and it has hurt the dynamic of the Roos line-up.

And injuries have not been confined solely to the Roos' big three.

"We're still running low on personnel," Jacobs lamented.

The Kangaroos cast aside their injury woes to record one of their finest wins of the season.

They accelerated to victory with a powerful 12goals to five in the second half, having led by just six points at the main break.

Jacobs said the Roos' sound preparation and positive mindset was the key in a danger game.

"They've been going pretty well, their formline was solid, so we knew we had to go in switched on to win," he said.

"We trained really well on Thursday night and I was hopeful we could take that sort of intensity at training into the game. It was a good win."

Ben Foley was the catalyst for the Roos. The midfielder's another best-on-ground display showed why he could be one of the front-runners in the club's best and fairest count.

Jake Trevaskis ran both ways to amass over 30 possessions and a high tackle count.

Xavier Linton benefited from the first class service with four goals.

The Kangaroos will head into Saturday's local derby with Sunshine Heights at Ainsworth Reserve full of confidence.

This is one that both clubs will not want to lose.

"There is certainly a bit of bragging rights that goes along with it," Jacobs said.

Meanwhile, Jacobs has indicated his desire to remain as coach of the Roos next season.

He will sit down with the club in the next fortnight to discuss the future.

"I certainly want to [stay on]," he said.

"We'll sit down with the committee and make that call in a couple of weeks."
