Deer Park Lions blitz favourites in WRFL

08 Sep, 2009 04:00 AM
FAIRYTALES do come true in the Western Region Football League's division 2 competition.

Deer Park coach Jamie Madigan and his players are celebrating a remarkable 21-point win over unbackable favourite Parkside in the grand final at Chirnside Park on Sunday.

In one of the biggest upsets in the competition's history, the Lions blitzed the previously unbeaten Magpies in the second half to win 16.12(108) to 13.9(87).

Ruckman-forward Paul Mackie was outstanding around the ground and finished with three goals.

Experienced centre-half-back Wayne Duggan and speedy on-ballers Luke Summers and Shaun Harrison also contributed greatly.

Deer Park had to come from the elimination final to grab the ultimate glory.

Earlier in the day, Albion annihilated Werribee Juniors to win the under-18B premiership.

Albion is gunning for the division 1 reserves premiership.

Experienced forward Steven Pearce kicked eight goals in a match-winning display as the Cats finished full of run to beat Spotswood by 21 points in the preliminary final at Chirnside Park on Saturday.

Best players were Troy Kelm, Pearce, Brendan Brown, Jarred Magnabosco, Mathew Bettin and Matthew Gauci.

Albion does battle with Hoppers Crossing in the grand final at Chirnside Park this Saturday, 11.50am start.

They lost to the Warriors by 32 points in the second semi-final a fortnight ago, but the likes of Pearce and Magnabosco weren't in the line-up as they were playing in the senior side's do-or-die first semi-final against Spotswood.

WRFL's senior presentation night will be held at Sheldon Receptions on Friday, September 18.

Sunshine ball magnet Russell Douglas is a leading fancy to win the prestigious Barry Priest Medal, the division 1 competition's equivalent of the Brownlow Medal.

He won it in 2007.
