VTCA: Keilor Park ousts West Saints

21 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
KEILOR Park upset the apple cart with an 18-run win over fancied Airport West-St Christophers in the semi-final of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Twenty20 championship at Etzel Street Reserve last Tuesday.

The north division Devils are a full tier below the top-flight West Saints in the VTCA rankings, but gave them a cricket lesson in the 20-over-a-side format to earn a passage through to the final, where they will meet either South Caulfield or Port Melbourne.

Devils' playing president Michael Evans said his side should not be taken lightly in the final having already toppled two senior division teams enroute to the decider.

"There's not a game that we go into thinking we can't win. It's good to be able to rise up against the best."

The Devils won the toss and elected to bat on a two-paced track.

The tourists struggled to get out of first gear due to losses of a number of top-order wickets in quick succession.

Captain Jamie Manning (23) arrested the slide and when young gun Daniel Willcocks (21 not out) joined him at the crease the scoreboard ticked over a lot more freely.

A trait of this Devils outfit in their ability to remain calm under pressure saw them scrounge a defendable 9-94 off their 20 overs.

"We thought we might have been a bit short of runs," Evans said.

"We stayed calm and level-headed and we at least had something to defend."

The West Saints barely raised a yelp in their chase. The pre-game favourites were all out for 76 in 18.3 overs.

The Devils shared success in the field and with the ball with medium pacers Manning (3-14) and Evans (2-17) ripping through the line-up.

Left-arm finger spinner Jesse Ravanello, who, like Willcocks, is a product of the Devils junior program, put the brakes on with 3-8 off four overs.

Evans, a former coach who has worked closely with coach Andrew Murden in promoting youth from within the club, says the Devils got the right mix of youthful enthusiasm and veteran experience.

"We went in with a view of just enjoying it, but there's no doubt the competitive nature kicked in the longer it has gone on."

Airport West-St Christophers 76 (Ravanello 3-8 Manning 3-14 Evans 2-17) lt Keilor Park 9-94 (Manning 23 Willcocks 21no).
