SUNSHINE was "shattered" to miss out on a rare chance to claim back-to-back Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association first XI victories.
The Crows were crestfallen after losing a thrilling one-dayer to western suburbs rivals Yarraville by two wickets at Dempster Park on Saturday.
"Definitely disappointing - a heartbreaking loss," Crows captain Troy Stone told the Weekly.
"We were looking for two wins on the trot for the first time in about five years. The boys were shattered in the rooms afterwards."
Sunshine will point to its disastrous top-order batting as the major pitfall in the two-wicket loss.
The hosts slumped to 3-12 before mounting a middle-order recovery to post a respectable 6-156 off 45 overs.
However, it was not until 6pm when the true cost of the Crows' misfiring top-order would be revealed.
"We needed to get away to a better start and we spoke about that after the game," Stone said.
"It put us on the back foot and cost us in the end."
Romain Grenville (three), Evan Bassingthwaighte (four) and John Blake (duck) - stars of a shock win over Werribee a week earlier - were the culprits at the head of the order.
But the innings was resuscitated by Stone, returning from a trip to Bali, and Sam Magnano, recruited from local club Sydenham-Hillside in the winter.
Stone carved out 50 to make it 218 runs from his last three digs and Magnano proved a great support act with 39.
"We had to consolidate," Stone said. "It was good middle-order batting."
Young all-rounder Joey Blake chimed in with a crucial 33no and Justin Summerfield added 12no.
The Eagles top order produced almost a carbon copy to be on shaky ground at 4-41.
Their revival, too, was sparked by the middle order of Curtis Maguire (59) and Alex Hewet (23).
Two wickets apiece to Kapelan Kulendranathan, Kane Twentyman and Grenville was not enough as the Eagles passed the target eight down with eight balls to spare.
The Crows will be eager to bounce back in a two-dayer against Brunswick at Dempster Park, starting on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Sunshine was defeated by Plenty Valley in the final round of the Legends and Heroes Twenty20 league last Tuesday night.
The Crows finished with one win from four games.
