Saints confident but wary of others

02 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
ST Albans Saints coach John Thrush believes his side is hitting its straps in time for the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1 finals series and says the title is "definitely up for grabs".

The Saints are in red-hot form having won four matches in a row and Thrush said his side was one of the most balanced in the competition.

"The team is coming along nicely and we've had some good wins in the last three weeks which will give us confidence heading into the finals.

"When we've been in trouble with either our batting or bowling we've managed to turn it around at the other end and record important scores, which I think is important heading into the next few weeks.

"It shows we have a very balanced

side and if we play to our capabilities then I think we're a good chance and there is no reason why we can't win the title."

Thrush believes any one of the top four teams could end up with the premiership.

"Once you make the finals it's a bit of a raffle from there on in as you could get caught with a dodgy deck or an opposition player can have a great day out and decide the match.

"You only need to have ten off overs and you'll lose the match, so I think any team in the four has an even chance of winning."

Thrush singled out Matthew Montebello and Shane Jones as the batsmen he expects to put on a good show in the finals.

"Montebello is always good with the bat and we'll be definitely looking to him to make something happen for us as our batting side of things has let us down a bit this season," he said.

"Shane is a new player at the club and has been pretty consistent with the bat and I think he is on the verge of smacking someone, which might just come in handy in the finals competiton."

As for his bowlers, Thrush believes Andrew McCammond and Tom Langley-Dunn are capable of hurting any side.

"They're both quick bowlers and they have been solid for us all season long, so of course I expect them to make something happen with the ball.

"If everyone does their job I'm sure we'll have a good crack at the finals."
