A SINGLE victory is all that Sunshine has to show for its journey of promise through the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association's elite under-15 RM Hatch Shield.
Crows coach Kane Twentyman told the Weekly his side was better than a one-win wonder with a mixture of bad luck and a lack of killer instinct consigning his side to bottom of the west group.
"We were really unfortunate in about three of those games where we were pipped at the post," he said.
"We just didn't have the polish when we needed it in tight games."
The Crows got the belated win they so desired in the final group game on Thursday.
They caused shockwaves in beating powerhouse Broadmeadows on the road at JP Fawkner Reserve by 13 runs and eliminating the home side from the finals.
Twentyman said his players never lost faith in each other, despite going winless in the opening five matches.
"We lost a game by four runs, two others by two wickets and we fell short chasing a small target when we should have won," he said.
"I'm glad the boys got a win because they stuck strong, toiled hard and were right behind each other."
It was Twentyman's second year in charge of the Crows at the tournament and he will put his hand up for a third term next summer.
He says there was a noticeable lift in the professionalism of the group as compared to last year.
He did, however, admit to making one mistake, neglecting to select a full-time spinner.
"In the future, I will definitely have one spinner in the side," he said.
"[The bowling attack] got a bit one-paced."
The bowlers he did have at his disposal did themselves proud, in particular Deer Park-Ardeer-sourced paceman Chase Singarella.
The change bowler claimed four wickets on three occasions.
"He was getting through the batsmen with his pace," Twentyman said.
Dean Dial and Aaron Briscoe were the other standouts of the Crows attack.
Their tremendously disciplined bowling unnerved opposition batsmen.
The Crows were frustratingly inconsistent in the batting department.
James Leach, Ben Luca, Shashin Withanawasam and Briscoe showed enough to suggest they have a bright future in the game.
Leach (65), Luca and Briscoe (both 28) played massive part in the Crows' stunning run chase to beat Broadmeadows on the final match day.
