Club on the ball with history

26 Jan, 2010 12:00 AM

DEER Park's oldest living original resident has given the members of Deer Park Ardeer Cricket Club a history lesson on their club which they knew nothing about.

Alex O' Brien, an 86 year old former Deer Park Football Club premiership player, presented the club with the cricket ball used in the club's 1930 victory in the final of the then local industrial cricket competition. It had been passed on to him by his father Walter, who was part of the successful side.

O'Brien also presented the club with a photograph of the match-winning team and another of his father holding the ball after being the side's most influential player in the final.

O'Brien senior was the opening batsman and wicketkeeper and made 87 in the final before heroically taking a hat trick of wickets when the match seemed to be lost, to win the game for Deer Park.

Deer Park's secretary and club member for more than a decade, Vince Crimi, said it was a "very important moment in the club's history" to be given the artefacts especially as they revealed a history to its members which they "didn't know much about".

"These are the most significant items we have at the club in terms of their age and what they represent," Crimi said.

"They give the club a sense of history which is not just about the past few decades."

Crimi said the artefacts coupled with Alex O'Brien's recollections his father and the 1930s players have had a "massive impact" on the club's current crop of senior players.

"Most of the senior players are now aware of this rich history which we have and a number of them have gone to see Alex and have spoken to him about cricket in those days.

"They were all impressed by what he had to say and I think it's important to them to know a bit about the club they play for." The club is currently in the process of organising a reunion.
