THE Sunshine Eagles were rejoicing following last week's hard-fought 5-4 win over Malvern at the Melbourne Ball Park.
The result continues an encouraging second half of the season for the division 1 side following a dismal opening which yielded just a solitary success. A stellar performance from import and Eagles coach Jason Benson was backed up by some solid hitting from Shaun Moore to seal a much-needed win and instil some confidence in a rapidly-maturing squad.
"All we have is youth really, so we need these young guys to perform" Benson said. "Even though it's been a tough year, you can't put a price on the type of experience these guys are getting."
The Eagles' campaign has yielded just four wins but has been hindered by a knee injury to Benson, the team's star pitcher. "It's the first time I've been able to start in a long while due to my knee injury, so that was a huge bonus for us," he said.
"If we can play some kind of solid defence while I'm pitching we have an opportunity to win most games."
There was also marked improvement in the Eagles' offence, with Benson joining Moore in putting a decent score on the board, something the Sunshine batters have been unable to do in most games.
"We've been shut out in more than half of our games, so it's pretty hard to win if you can't score," Benson said.
While Benson has been frustrated by personal injuries, he has managed to find a few shining lights during a bleak year.
"The Malvern win definitely has been a highlight for us and showed how we have continued to improve in the second half of the season.
"Also the play of young guys like Cameron Brown, Chris Dugan and Shannon Hornstra has been really encouraging."
Benson is sure the young squad can continue to improve and gradually begin its ascent up the division 1 ladder as long as it can learn to handle the cut and thrust of senior competition.
"The challenge for these young guys is to play at a high level for the duration of the game and not be out-willed by a more experienced opponent."
