Baseball Victoria: Eagles on line to rule the roost

21 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
TEN wins on the trot have Sunshine talking automatic promotion in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2.

The exciting Eagles moved into outright second on the ladder with a 13-1 mauling of bottom side Port Melbourne on the road at Murphy Reserve on Saturday.

Eagles coach Shaun Moore says top spot and the automatic elevation to division 1 is attainable for his white-hot team.

''We want that top spot," he said. "Everyone is hungry for it.

"If we go through the rest of the games undefeated, we should finish on top and that's where we want to be."

Not since the first week of December have the Eagles lost a competitive game.

This is largely to do with the power of work from their roster of pitchers.

Adam Irons started on the mound against Port and followed with a flawless performance.

The one and only run conceded came from little-used reliever Shannon Hornstra.

Moore was glowing in his praise of flame thrower Irons.

"He was on fire on the mound," he said.

"He had about 13 strikeouts in six innings."

The batters also had a big day out for the Eagles.

Moore led the way with four hits in a dominant display.

"It was good to get a few hits," he said.

"I've been swinging the bat hard in the past few weeks and finding the fielders.

"I didn't let it get to me, I stayed mentally strong and focused on the job and it turned around."

Brad Jones, the most consistent Eagle in the batter's box, had a three-hit game.

The incredibly resilient Jones has a remarkable .411 batting average and a .464 on-base percentage.

"In a good year, you're usually batting around .300," Moore said.

"When you're batting over .400, that's amazing.

"He really battles at the plate, works hard and finds his pitches."

The Eagles will host Ormond-Glenhuntly at Barclay Reserve in Sunshine in the next round on Saturday.
