WITH spring starting this week, people are being warned to watch out for swooping magpies - of the avian kind rather than the football variety.
The Department of Sustainability and Environment last week launched a 'magpie map' on its website to report and highlight problem areas.
Wildlife manager Ian Temby said magpies had started their breeding season early this year. "It's important to remember, only a small percentage of magpies, butcherbirds, kookaburras and plovers attack.
"However, it can be a real shock particularly for young children who encounter this behaviour. The best strategy is always to avoid areas where they know a bird is likely to swoop them."
He said people could also visit the DSE website to download a 'swoop-off kit', which includes tips and images of a pair of eyes which can be attached to the back of a hat or bike helmet.
"These can help discourage some birds from swooping."
Mr Temby said other measures people could take were wearing a hat or bike helmet to protect their head and donning a pair of sunglasses to shield their eyes. He said bike riders could use long cable ties protruding from the top of their helmets but advised that if they were targeted they should get off and walk.
