EMERGING soccer teams reflecting the municipality's cultural diversity will come together to contest this weekend's inaugural Brimbank Cup.
The event, established following the success of last year's African Nations Tournament, will feature 21 men's teams and six women's.
Matches will be played at Keilor Lodge Reserve in Taylors Lakes.
Organised by Brimbank Council with Victoria Police and Sydenham Park Soccer Club, the tournament is aimed at giving residents of different background and skill a chance to play the world game at a decent level.
Other attractions will include a barbecue, African food stalls, helicopter fly-bys and performances by the Victoria Police band.
An exhibition match will be played between a Victoria Police soccer team and an all-African side.
Council chairman Peter Lewinsky says the cup is the perfect opportunity for players in informal teams to catch the eye of scouts from established clubs.
"There's a push for new clubs all the time, but there simply isn't enough space, facilities or resources to go round," he said.
"The weekend will do a lot to build new relationships between informal groups and established clubs. We hope some of the park players will end up being recruited."
Some of the more established clubs to compete in the tournament include reigning Victorian Premier League champions Green Gully and former National Soccer League side Melbourne Knights.
The manager of Sunshine-based Victoria Thunder, Jonathan Thea, says the team, mostly made up of Liberian players living locally, has struggled to get organised since forming in 2005.
"We're a very good team and are winning lots of games in community soccer ... however, most of our players are studying or just finding it hard financially so there's no cash to spare when it comes to getting registered," Thea said.
Teams will compete in a round-robin tournament from 9am on Saturday and Sunday, with the winners and runners-up in both competitions to receive awards at 3pm Sunday.
The council expects more than 1000 people will attend.
