A PROGRAM designed to reduce the number of patients experiencing falls in hospitals was last week launched at StVincent's and Mercy Private Hospital.
Nineteen per cent of all patients at the hospital come from the western suburbs.
Hospital statistics showed that by 2051, falls were expected to cost the health system $1.37million a year.
To try to reduce this, the hospital has developed the Ruby Red Socks falls prevention program.
Surgeon Christos Kondogianis said it was an unfortunate fact that many falls happened in hospitals. Over a third of all hospital-acquired injuries are caused by falls.
"Unfortunately a serious fall in a hospital – indeed anywhere in the community – can have severe implications and may even result in death, particularly if it causes broken bones or major complications to physically vulnerable aged patients."
The program is specifically designed to help patients, their friends and family reduce their risk of sustaining a serious injury while staying in hospital.
It includes reminding patients to "call, not fall" for help, continuing risk assessment and providing non-slip red socks, specially designed by physiotherapists to reduce falls.
