DESPITE being raised in Sunshine and spending all her primary days at a local school, Brimbank Council will not be hosting a civic reception for Winter Olympics gold medallist Lydia Lassila.
Former mayor Sam David made the call last week to honour the locally raised champion with a civic reception.
Council chief executive officer Nick Foa said he congratulated Lydia on her wonderful achievement but "there has been no discussion or requests for a reception".
Mr Foa, like most of Melbourne's media, assumed Lassila had attended Diggers Rest Primary School because she visited the school last week.
"We note that one [reception] has already taken place at her primary school," Mr Foa said.
However, as reported by the Advocate last week, Lassila attended Our Lady's Primary School in Sunshine from prep to grade 6.
But she still received a hero's welcome at Diggers Rest Primary School.
The freestyle aerialist was met at the airport by loving family and adoring fans and then made a beeline for home, with a detour past the local school.
A loud cheer went up when Lassila, 28, entered the auditorium that had been decked out with a massive banner congratulating her on her efforts.
Principal Sean Lawless introduced Lassila and the Olympic athlete took questions from pupils.
Lydia's mother Phyllis Ierodiaconou said it was hard to find the words to describe her pride.
Lassila was looking forward to a lunch at home with her parents and three brothers followed by a good rest.
