NOT having friends or playmates can be frustrating for children. But north-west parents can ensure their children get to socialise with others by taking them to the Hillside Playgroup.
The not-for-profit group is run by local mums and volunteers at the Hillside Community Centre.
About 120 children take part in the classes, held Monday-Friday from 9.15-11.15. Classes include structured activities like arts and crafts sessions and storytime.
Hillside mum Melinda Portelli says the group benefits isolated parents who don't get a chance to get out of the house.
"A lot of mums and dads are stuck at home with the kids and don't get a chance to socialise," she says.
"The group gives parents a chance to take a break and have a chat with other parents while the kids enjoy the activities and get to make new friends."
The playgroup's president, Louise Muse, says new members are needed before the group can offer longer sessions.
"We've been around since 1994, but our numbers have dropped off in recent years and we want to make sure parents know we are there," Mrs Muse says.
"The group provides a great support network for parents. We have people coming from Taylors Lakes and Caroline Springs and it's a great way to meet new people."
