OLIVIA Di Cocco dreams of playing her violin at concerts around the world.
She's on the right path after winning a music scholarship.
The Caroline Springs resident, 10, was selected as first winner of the Invergowrie Foundation scholarship, which will allow her to take part in the Melbourne Youth Music program at the Victorian College of the Arts.
She will receive free tuition for the 32-week course, which includes regular rehearsals, tutorials, specialist workshops and public performances.
She will get a one-on-one lesson from a female member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
Olivia's mother Raelene applied for the scholarship because it would have been difficult to pay for her daughter to join the program.
"I took Olivia to the program for the second half of last year, but we couldn't afford to continue taking her," she says.
"The program costs about $3000 a year so I'm very grateful to the foundation for being sponsors."
Olivia, a grade 5 pupil at Mowbray College, fell in love with the violin in prep grade after hearing the instrument being played at school.
She says she nagged her mum for several weeks to let her take up lessons.
"I really wanted to play, so one day I went to the front office at school and got a form for my mum to sign so I could start."
Olivia will start her lessons on February 11. Melbourne Youth Music is calling for more applications for musically talented girls aged 7-25.
