Park signs on way

30 Jun, 2009 04:00 AM
SIGNS will be put up at Cairnlea's parks by the end of the year, Brimbank Council has announced.

In a delayed response after the Advocate's article last week, the council's engineering and operations acting general manager Neil Whiteside said the council was completing a review of regulatory signs in selected parks to be completed in the coming months.

But Cairnlea Residents Association secretary Jason Rooth said the move was a little too late. "We've been asking for it for a long time-why would it take a year to review putting up the signs?

"You go to any park in the east of Melbourne and you know exactly what's going on; the signs are there."

He said many dog owners walked pets off leash in Cairnlea, young people rode motorbikes through the parks, and drivers parked cars just metres from the barbecue areas.

"If you tell them off they tell you there's no sign saying they can't. The council is waiting for someone to get hit before it acts."

Mr Whiteside said new regulatory signs in reserves in Cairnlea and other areas in Brimbank would be set up following the review. "Signage is, however, only one tool to regulate behaviour in reserves," he said.

"As another means of encouraging appropriate behaviour, the council will list park regulations in future park promotion material. Both the signage and promotional material will encourage residents to report inappropriate behaviour."
