Orchestra will help people with a disability find their voice

02 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
A PROGRAM to help people with a disability to create electronic and acoustic music will resume soon in Delahey.

The Ambient Orchestras program helps young adults with intellectual disabilities become part of an ensemble and express themselves.

Founder John Edgar launched the program in Footscray in 2008 and said it had been successful.

"It's about them becoming part of a band. They compose, record and perform as part of a instrumental group. Our aim is to also provide artistic opportunities for consumers of mental health services."

This will happen soon, with the Western Region Health Centre to start up a branch of Ambient Orchestras next month, operating out of the Tin Shed in St Albans.

The program is supported by Brimbank Council via a $6000 grant.

In December, the orchestra program won the 2009 Australian Music Council Music in Communities Award for the promotion of inclusion and wellbeing in the community through music.
