Melton mothers' group recognised

31 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
A MELTON Shire mothers' group that has supported countless local women has been recognised for its contribution to the community.

Mothers Network was selected as the shire's community organisation of the year.

Diggers Rest mother and network president Deborah Watson said members were excited with the win.

The Melton-Burnside group, formed in 2003, has about 300 members across the municipality.

Mrs Watson said support groups were crucial for all mothers, who face many challenges after giving birth and returning home.

A council spokesman said the meetings were important for isolated or overwhelmed mothers who did not have support networks to help them through the various stages of motherhood.

Activities run by the group include a kinder gym, playgroups and parenting information sessions.

Other Melton Shire award winners were Edith Feth (citizen of the year) and Marayne Muller (young citizen of the year).
