GROWING up in the African nation of Cape Verde, Ras Jahknow (pictured) had a helping hand in learning English: Bob Marley.
The Sunshine West reggae singer and guitarist decided at an early age there was something in Marley's music that needed to be understood.
"The music of Bob Marley and The Wailers spread the message of peace around the world," he said.
"I couldn't always understand the words, but I could feel it."
He set about learning English and a life-long love followed.
Jahknow says he's honoured to be performing as the key act for this weekend's Bob Marley Birthday Bash, celebrating the work of the music legend who was born in 1945.
Jahknow moved to Australia in 2007 after meeting his Indian-Australian wife while living in London.
His own music draws upon the reggae roots of Marley and he's excited to be performing his hero's work.
"We normally do original songs. We're not a cover band, but I didn't hesitate to be part of this," he says.
Jahknow wants people to enjoy the music on its own terms and appreciate the message that influenced Marley's work.
"These are songs of peace, love and harmony. He is not here physically, but people are still hearing his message.
"I think he's going to be around forever."
The Bob Marley Birthday Bash is at The Corner Hotel from 8.30pm on Saturday.
