Help kids injured in quake: aid groups

09 Mar, 2010 08:20 AM
AUSTRALIAN aid groups are on the ground in Chile as the nation struggles to deal with the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck on February 27.

And Brimbank residents are being urged to contribute as aid floods in from across the world.

Caritas Australia and Save The Children are among those in Santiago, providing emergency relief to people affected by the 8.8-magnitude quake, which killed more than 800 people.

Head of Save The Children's Chile emergency response team, Matt Wingate, said local children would need continuing support.

"They may be injured themselves or will have to deal with the trauma of what they've been through, of seeing their homes destroyed or their parents or siblings killed or injured.

"Some are also likely to have been separated from their families in the chaos and will urgently need protection if they are trying to cope on their own."

Both groups are welcoming donations. To contribute, phone Caritas Australia on 1800024413 or Save The Children on 1800760011.
