ROADS campaigner David Anderson has slammed VicRoads for not consulting motorists before building the new Calder Freeway-Kings Road interchange.
The $62 million interchange at Taylors Lakes was opened last week, nearly five months ahead of schedule.
As part of the joint state-federal project, Kings Road has been upgraded and extended as a four-lane divided road through to the freeway.
But Mr Anderson, who is secretary of the Delahey Action Group, says the opening of the interchange will lead to more congestion at the roundabout intersecting Kings and Taylors roads.
He said the roundabout should have been removed and traffic lights installed before works on the interchange began.
"Residents in Delahey and Sydenham should have been involved at the planning stage and now VicRoads is ignoring our calls for traffic lights.
"The roundabout is really dangerous for drivers and for people trying to cross the road to get to the Delahey Village shopping centre."
Roads Minister Terry Mulder said he would discuss with VicRoads the interchange's possible impact on the roundabout at Taylors-Kings roads.
"I'll take advice from VicRoads as to how the road is performing and we'll make a decision based on the information they provide," he said.
Mr Mulder said the early completion of the interchange was welcome news for commuters and businesses depending on safe and reliable travel along the freeway.
"Through cost saving we have been able to reallocate funding to nearby safety improvements, including the upgrade of the Sunshine Avenue and Calder Freeway intersection."
Mr Mulder said no decision had been made about the start date for works on an interchange at Calder Freeway and Calder Park Drive.
VicRoads did not respond before the Weekly's deadline.
