Delahey residents backed on lights

07 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM
ANXIOUS Delahey residents are calling for the urgent installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Taylors and Kings roads.

But while Brimbank Council says it would support the addition of lights at the roundabout, VicRoads says it is only one option being considered.

Concerned about increasing traffic snarls and safety, residents say the area's population growth is the main reason for congestion along Taylors Road.

"Now cars come all the way from Keilor Plains [to Taylors Hill]," Taylors Hill's Salih Hasan said.

"But even on Saturdays there are two lanes coming into Taylors Road [before the intersection] and there's a bus stop as well. "It's not safe."

Delahey Village worker Simone Gatto said traffic lights would alleviate congestion and reduce the risk of accidents.

Other residents told the Weekly they had witnessed near misses involving cars and pedestrians. They echoed concerns over traffic jams.

Keilor Downs' Senior Sergeant Wayne Moed confirmed police had been monitoring the congestion. "The intersection of Kings Road and Taylors Road carries a large amount of traffic, particularly during peak periods. There have been a number of minor collisions in recent times and it's my view that an upgrade of the intersection should be a priority."

VicRoads' acting regional director, Vince Punaro, said the authority was looking at options to address congestion and safety issues. One option put forward for consideration is to replace the roundabout with traffic signals. But Mr Punaro stopped short of confirming that lights would be installed.

Lights at the intersection need to be addressed but the bigger issue is widening Taylors Road. The amount of traffic has increased to the point that it clogs up all the way back to Calder Park Drive. Widen the road first and then add lights.

Yes, I totally agree. Many vehicles are travelling into town from Burnside and Caroline Springs. These have priority over vehicles travelling south along Kings Road. The delays can be substantial. What about the roundabout at Sunshine Avenue and Melton Highway as well???? Traffic east-bound on Melton Highwy can be stopped all the way back to Kings Road during morning peak, due to the roundabout at Sunshine Avenue!
