Cyclist dies after being hit by car in Hillside

A FEMALE cyclist has died after being struck by a car in Hillside early this morning.

Police believe a maroon Nissan coupe was travelling east on the Melton Highway when it collided with the cyclist at the intersection of Gourlay Road around 6.15am.

The female cyclist was believed to be travelling north on Gourlay Road when she was hit, and died at the scene.

The driver, a 23-year-old Hillside man, is assisting police with their enquiries.

The deceased woman is yet to be formally identified.

The crash takes the state’s road toll to 35 for the year – up from 25 at the same time last year.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
