Charges over attack in St Albans

16 Jan, 2012 09:34 AM
A ST ALBANS man has been charged with a number of offences over a vicious assault that left a shopkeeper in a critical condition in St Albans on Friday afternoon.

Brimbank task-force detectives arrested 33-year-old Goran Jeftic in his St Albans home about 3.30pm on Saturday afternoon following the alleged iron bar attack.

He was charged with four counts of armed-robbery, two counts of false imprisonment and criminal damage, intentionally causing serious injury and resisting arrest.

Police were called to the Ziggy's Place take away food outlet on Princess Street around 2pm after an armed man allegedly demanded cash and grabbed the till.

The man allegedly hit the woman in the head with an iron bar before fleeing the store, chased by the victim’s father.

The 40-year-old woman from Melton South was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The man was remanded in custody to appear in Melbourne Magistrate’s Court today.
