A PASSION for ballroom dancing is uniting a group of men and women of different ages and cultural backgrounds in Keilor.
The Brimbank Community Ballroom Dance Club was formed in November following the success of Brimbank Council's how-to-dance classes.
The club's 40 members meet for a social dance at Keilor Bowls Club each Thursday and will take part in monthly supper dance events starting March 3.
President Gavin Thoms says the club gives members a chance to develop friendships.
"Most of us know each other from the dance classes run by Brimbank Council and we decided we would take it to the next level by starting our own club," he says.
"Many people over the age of 50 can become isolated, so this club encourages social, physical and cultural interaction.
"We have members aged in their mid 40s to mid 70s from at least 10 different cultural backgrounds."
Mr Thoms says the bowls club was instrumental in getting the dancers up and running.
"We approached them about using their space and they allowed us to be social members," he says.
"It makes for a good social mix because our dance group is mostly made up of women and the bowls club of men."
The club was last week awarded a three-year grant of $1500 through the state government's multicultural senior citizens organisational support program.
"We encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to come and join," Mr Thoms says.
